Yellow-throated Warbler in Eastern Redbud Blooms

While many warblers are strictly high-canopy foragers, the Yellow-throated Warbler ( Setophaga dominica ) is a master of the vertical landscape. In the early Illinois spring, these striking birds often descend from the towering pines and sycamores to explore the lower-level blossoms of the Eastern Redbud ( Cercis canadensis ). The vibrant, magenta-pink flowers of the Redbud provide a stunning, high-contrast backdrop for the bird's sharp slate-gray plumage and brilliant yellow throat. This particular encounter captures the warbler in a rare moment of stillness, nestled among the clusters of pea-like blossoms that emerge directly from the branches before the leaves even appear. To capture this composition, I maintained a low perspective to ensure the bird remained at eye-level, preserving the intimate connection between the subject and the viewer. By utilizing a wide aperture on my Sony 200-600mm lens, I was able to create a soft, ethereal background of blurred pink blossoms, making the warbler’s fine feather details pop against the spring landscape.
