Obsidian, the grizzly bear, in Yellowstone National Park

I was waiting quietly by the roadside in Yellowstone National Park in mid-May, hoping to photograph the famed grizzly sow, "Obsidian." She soon appeared, leading her three cubs just out of sight behind the treeline. As she marched toward the road's edge, she paused, stepping onto the snowy bank, and fixed her gaze directly forward. This portrait captures the stunning, split-second intensity of that moment—her damp, massive form and piercing focus beautifully embody the untamed spirit of the Yellowstone wilderness.
